Q: Where did you get the idea for the Time-traveling Demon Hunter Series?
A: It actually came to me in a dream. In the dream, there was a witch, who had fallen in love with a man who'd appeared out of nowhere and asked her to help him vanquish a demon. As is the way with dreams, I didn't actually dream the whole demon-vanquishing bit, but it was as a memory for the dream-witch. It transpired that she got time-travelled (is that a word? ;) ) somewhere and all she knew was that her time-traveling demon hunter was in trouble and she was the only one who could save him. And then, I woke up. And I wondered..."what happened next?" And I decided to find out.
Q: Will the characters from book 1 all be in book 2?
A: At this point, I have plans for some to return, but not all. And that's all I'll say for now - Spoilers! :)
Q: Did you envision any particular real-life people as the characters while you were writing them?
A: Oh, yes! I usually 'cast' when I read - so as I read, there's sort of a film playing in my head. It turns out to be the same when I'm writing - maybe not straightaway, but eventually I start thinking "oooh, ____ would be good as this character!"
Q: So, who plays Alex in your mind-movie?
A: I "cast" a lovely English actor called Tom Mison as Alex while I was writing. I didn't share that with anyone, so it was fun when my editor said he read Alex as if he were being played by Tom Mison! I've heard from one reader that they would love to see Chris Pratt play him if it became a movie!
Q: How about Mora?
A: Hayley Atwell was my Mora. I'm an Agent Carter fangirl :)
Q: How many books have you planned for the series?
A: Currently, I have a story arc that would comprise two books. That could change, or there's a possibility I might write the story of another character from this world. We'll see.
Q: Do you know how it all ends - have you planned it all out already?
A: Yes, I have an outline of the story arc in mind. I haven't gone into too much detail with plotting and outlining, but I do have a solid ending in mind. So, there is some structure for me to build on, but also opportunity to be flexible with the narrative.
Q: Can you give us an idea of what to expect in book 2?
A: In book 2, Mora will discover more about Alex's time-travel order, while fighting to reunite with him. According to the rules and restrictions of the order, Alex and Mora aren't supposed to ever see each other again, but neither of them planned to just give up completely. As we see at the end of book 1, circumstances have tested those rules and restrictions, but Mora will have to face some pretty big challenges in order to be reunited with Alex.
Q: Hey, it's been a while - it's 2022!! Where's the follow-up?
A: Well, see, what had happened was...my computer crashed. BIG TIME crashed...and it ate several chapters that I'd just completed writing, and had not backed up yet. It was a bit of a catastrophe - complete hard drive failure, such that I was not able to even access it remotely to copy data. It hit me really hard, that. I just couldn't bring myself to make a start again, thinking of all that story that I'd just lost. And then, the political world went a bit skee-whiff, and then there was Covid. I sort of just shut down, creatively, with the exception of occasional artwork produced. Then, in late 2021, I set myself the task of attempting to recreate what was lost in the HD crash. I realised that, although I may not recover all the things I'd loved of what I'd written and lost (there were some lovely turns of phrase that I will miss), I could still tell the story, and maybe even improve on what I'd written previously. It has still been slow going, but I am getting there!
